Eyeglasses was written for the New York University Percussion Ensemble in 2020. Inspired by the Jamila Woods quote, “Poems are bullshit, unless they are eyeglasses,” Eyeglasses explores the nature in which every person’s realities interact with each other. In the first movement, each Vibraphonist has the same melodic line, which is repeated at different points throughout the measure. A minute change in the placement of one performer’s line can create a completely different texture, allowing each performer a chance to vitally alter the feel of the piece. The second movement asks each Vibraphonist to perform their melody using whatever rhythm they like, before everyone comes together to finish the piece.
