Circuit Slurry
duration- ~10 minutes. solo piano
Written as part of the 2020 NYU Piano-Composer Collaboration, Circuit Slurry was the first ever piece I wrote at NYU. The first movement of the piece (Volt) attempts to replicate the rhythmic, but not metered, nature of Morse code, centering around one high pitch which continues throughout the movement. At the end of the movement, I imagine a circuit running faster and faster and faster, until it finally breaks down and falls apart. The second movement (Jolt), repairs the circuit by replicating electric shocks, scraping the strings inside the piano, and using extended techniques to create completely different textures than in Volt. The third movement (Bolt), sees the circuit come back to life, and once again run itself into the ground, calling on themes used in the first two movements to finish the piece.
I: Volt
II: Jolt
III: Bolt
Circuit Slurry was premiered in 2021 by Shuting Ye at New York University.
